| The Pledge: Foreward
This modern-day, soul mate love story began in ancient Egypt during the Sixth Dynasty. In the first story (to be published in the book, The Pharaoh’s Queen), Pharaoh Teti and Nadjet-M-Pet (Teet), fall deeply in love. Later, while on her deathbed, they pledge their eternal love to one another. Committed to their belief that their spirits will survive death, they agree to search for each other and love again and again, throughout eternity.
The Pledge is set in San Antonio, Texas and opens in September 2002. Teti and Teet are Tom and Tish, the principal characters of the book. From their points of view, the reader feels their uncanny physical reactions when they first meet and shares the emotional affinity as their life energies recognize the reunion.
As the story unfolds, Tom and Tish experience identical dreams; vignettes of events from past lives that offer clues to who they once were. As they struggle to find logical answers to ancient messages, they live every-day lives as recently divorced adults. They meet, fall in love, and again have their happiness interrupted by forces still determined to keep them apart.
Tish
All Latisha Edwards wants is to enjoy her life again as she proves she can make it on her own... without a man, especially one who would ever hurt her. Her marriage to a handsome, charming, and successful pediatrician, produced two beautiful children and her dream home; the estate house they built together and that he later walked away from because of the one-last, “other woman.” With Dr. Marcus Brown essentially out of her life, Tish is determined to enjoy raising her children, her success as a marketing professional, and maintaining the home in which she and her children have become accustomed to living.
Thirty-five years old, Tish finds herself in a place not unlike so many other women. Single, attractive, educated, and out-going, she recognizes that Marcus has left her damaged. His history of marital unfaithfulness and abusive control over her life are still too fresh this side of divorce for her to feel comfortable moving on with a new relationship. Trusting men again is an issue Tish must face and resolve as her need for a loving, monogamous relationship naturally evolves as time creates distance from her last experience with a truly satisfying one.
Tom
Thomas Manning has everything he wants, now that he’s free to meet and date women like any normal man in his mid-thirties. Recently divorced from Katrina, his wife of fifteen years, Tom’s move as an Army sergeant to Fort Sam Houston, Texas is a blessing in disguise. Close enough to El Paso to see his son, Shaun whenever he wants to and far enough from Katrina to see other women without the fear of any unexpected drama. A mutual agreement that the marriage wasn’t working led to their parting of ways. He packed his car, leaving everything they’d built together behind.
As he settles into his living quarters on the Army post, Tom’s life as a bachelor couldn’t begin any better. Two of the most stunning women he’d ever met show interest in him and he hardly knows what to do with himself. Guarding his emotions, he dates both Tish and Sable, a fellow Army sergeant, keeping it “as real” as he can. A choice he made fifteen years before confronts him again, and he realizes what he wants and what he gets have everything to do with the decisions he makes along the way.
