| Delta Girls Stories of Sisterhood: Sorors Helping a Soror Out
I am very blessed. I am in a chapter, the San Antonio Alumnae Chapter, which cares about its sorors.
When it was about time to register for the 39th Southwest Regional Conference in Dallas, I had not taken any action. I had been unemployed for about three months. A soror had called because she was concerned about me, and had me on her heart. We talked awhile, and the subject of the regional conference, came up. I told her that I wasn’t sure if I would be attending because of lack of funds. We talked some more on other subjects then ended the conversation.
An hour later, I received another phone call from the concerned soror. She stated that she had contacted a few of the chapter members who each had made a contribution for my regional registration fees. She said that everyone she contacted had been more than willing to help. She said that she would present me with the gift at the next sorority meeting. She also stated that she would check with her roommate to see if she would mind an extra person in the room with them.
When she called back again, not only did I have a place to stay, but also her roommate took the initiative to purchase my airline ticket so that we all could travel and arrive together. And sure enough, my airline confirmation arrived via e-mail.
I was so overwhelmed that I didn’t know how to respond, but to say thank you, thank you thank you. I was so filled with emotions that when I hung up the phone, I cried and got on my knees in prayer to thank God for his many blessings.
The timing was perfect also because my birthday was approaching. So when I received the generous gifts, they were presented in a birthday card. The soror who initiated it all is a natural born planner and organizer. She knows how to conceptualize a plan, go to the resources and get results. She and the soror who purchased the airline ticket always think about others above themselves. All the sorors have been cheerful givers without expecting anything in return. I feel that they have all given in the spirit of sisterly love.
But the blessings do not stop there. Just before the conference, another soror had purchased extra event tickets for the Collegiate and Social Action Luncheons. The same soror who had initiated everything made me aware of these tickets. When I contacted the soror to ask about the event tickets, she told me that the tickets were mine if I would just pick them up.
As my blessings continue, another soror had purchased her registration packet from a soror who was unable to attend the conference. This soror had planned to take her husband with her. So the packet came with multiple event tickets. Again, the same soror who started these wonderful events made me aware of these tickets also. I was able to receive a ticket for the Step Show.
The Southwest Regional Conference was a wonderful experience. I truly enjoyed the trip to Dallas, the fellowship with my roommates and all the regional sorors and events. I want to use this vehicle to express my heartfelt thank you to all those sorors who saw my need and fulfilled my dream. I felt that I had come full circle with Delta because it was in Dallas that I had attended my first National Convention. God Bless you all!!!
